Jonathon Kramer Music Theory

considers music not as autonomous but as relevant to cultural, social, and political contexts "Speaking in Tongues" is the second single from their latest release Drinking from the Sun which is about how if you strip it back - we are all the same - and yet there is still so much discrimination in contemporary society... why we still persist on oppressing each other is baffling, and it comes from a place of ignorance. Even though it's not directly targeting any one particular facet of society it is still speaking out against a general political issue.

Tarantino's Self References

A way in which Tarantino self refrences in the film is when he uses camera angles which a featured in many of his films. This creates his trademark, it is known that as a directer he enjoys to feature elements that the audience will recognise it as his work even if it has little contextual value. This shot of from the victims point of view up to his/hers attacker is also seen in Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill and Deathproof.

Hans Landa's Pipe

We seeColonel Landa smoking a calabash pipe when talking to the man who is hiding the jews.  This is a reference to Sherlock Holmes as it is a typical steroetype to draw upon. It also suggests the fact that Landa's character has solved the case of the hiding family and is a "detective" for the Nazis. Either way it looks out of place in this period of history, but is seen as a cultural norm which actually is false.

Holiday Inn hyper reality

I feel that this is a version of hyper reality as it suggests to the consumer that the hotel will offer you a 'holiday'. A holiday to many people should be unique, but the reality of these hotels is that they are generic in their make up. But because of what it is labelled as you return no matter of experience, just like the McDonalds burger.

Quotes on creativity

http://twistedsifter.com/2012/03/15-famous-quotes-on-creativity/

this web page shows the quotes on creativity that I find inspiring.

Postmodernism - What I've learnt so far...

Paradox - Two contradicting states i.e an immovable object against an unstoppable force.

depth and depthlessness.

Bricolage - can take anything from anywhere and make it new.

3 approaches... - historical..... stylistic...... theoretical.

POSTMODERNISM IS A REACTION TO MODERNISM
to understand postmodernism we need first to understand modernism...

Modernism
experimenting with represenatations of reality
early part of the 20th century
value judgements... e.g high culture = good / low culture = bad.

modernism made everything clean, simple and neutral...

postmodernism went against all of these to the extreme...

Postmodernism texts embody specticism towards the ideas and ideals of the modern era, especially the ideas of progress, objectively, reason.

3 main theorists
- Lyotard
- Baudrillard
- Jameson

Hyper reality

The image of how something should look, against the reality.

Jacques Derrida - Life is copied from the fiction, not what actually is real.

Questions on creativity

What do you understand by ‘creativity’ and to what extent have you been creative?
To me creativity is to build something original with little reference to a current piece, I feel that I have used this to some degree in my work.
- How have you tried to facilitate and encourage your own creativity?
In all possible areas I have tried to construct ideas that are original, such as in my use of the infinate triangle.
- Did you experience limits/blocks on your own creativity?
Yes due to constraints on budget and equipment some of my ideas were not possible.
- How easy/difficult was it to be creative while still working to the brief?
This was something I found challenging to conform with.- Did working within conventions stifle your creativity?
To a degree yes.
- To what extent did you need to work with others and ‘bounce ideas’ off other people to be truly creative?
This was something I needed to do, especially with my work partner and teachers as well as peers.
How much of your creativity was about trying to picture things in your mind’s eye?
This was the base of much of my creativity.
- How much of your creativity was about trial and error?#
In terms of draft to final work yes.
- To what extent was a lack of confidence an issue in terms of your creativity?

I did not have this constraint.
- To what extent was a lack of technical competence/confidence an obstacle to your creativity?

This created a barrier in my work I felt.
