to understand postmodernism we need first to understand modernism...

Modernism

experimenting with represenatations of reality

early part of the 20th century

value judgements... e.g high culture = good / low culture = bad.

modernism made everything clean, simple and neutral...

postmodernism went against all of these to the extreme...

Postmodernism texts embody specticism towards the ideas and ideals of the modern era, especially the ideas of progress, objectively, reason.

Hyper reality

The image of how something should look, against the reality.

McDonalds is an example of this.

Jacques Derrida - Life is copied from the fiction, not what actually is real.
